Return to Training – 25 May 2020

It is with great pleasure that the committee advises our members that we have approval to return to training at both our grass and turf facilities from Monday 25th May 2020.

In addition to the Hockey WA Return to Framework (HWA Return to Training Framework) please find attached the following approved SRHC COVID-19 documents for your information:

You will receive confirmation of your training details from your Coach and/or Team Manager. This will happen through your team WhatsApp group. If you are a registered senior member or a parent/caregiver of a junior member and you are not already a member of a team WhatsApp group then please make contact with one of the following committee members to ensure that you are placed in a group for training/communication purposes:

When attending a training session you will be asked to register your full name and a mobile contact number with the Coach or Team Manager. This will need to be done every time you attend training. Registration at any training session after Monday 25th May 2020 will be taken as your acknowledgement and acceptance of all the above documents and that participation in training is at your own risk.

Remember that you can still do the following to support our efforts to assist with reducing the spread of COVID-19 at SRHC and the wider community:

Hockey WA is currently working on their revised program for the start of the 2020 competition and clubs are providing feedback on this over this weekend. At this stage it is likely that fixtures will commence either the last week of June or fist week of July and extend into early October.

We know that most of our members are ‘keen as mustard’ to be returning to the field for training and that the start of the season can’t come soon enough! However, we also understand if you have had a change of heart due to the significant delays and impact caused by COVID-19.  If you have registered for the 2020 season but are no longer intending on playing then we ask you to make immediate contact at so we can remove you from our list. This is vitally important so that we can provide revised team nominations, if necessary, to Hockey WA in the coming weeks.

The above training plan will remain in force until further notice and further updates will be provided as new information is released by Hockey WA and the State Government.

If you have any further queries in relation to the above please do not hesitate to contact us at

President’s Report

Welcome to the 2020 Hockey season, I hope you are all fit and well, itching to get back onto the field.

This is my first year as the President of our fantastic club and I wanted to report something other than Covid-19.

For those of you that don’t know me, I am Jamie D’Souza and I have been involved with the club since 2007, coaching, managing, playing masters and supporting the Hawks!

The 2020 season was looking great with high numbers registering to play before we were rudely interrupted by the Corona Virus. We nominated 11 Senior teams, 10 Junior teams, Grads (yr 3/4 juniors), Hawk into Hockey and even had discussions for a Women’s Mid-Week Veterans side.

Hockey WA has been meeting with the all clubs trying to work through the issues that this pandemic has caused. The main problem people are facing is financial stress, with some players unable to afford to play this season. So if you can’t afford to play, please email the registrar at – and if you need any assistance contact me at or on 0408180074.

Our modified training sessions will commence soon, with restrictions now lifted, to allow 10 people at gatherings. We are just waiting for approval from the City of Gosnells to open and use our Facilities. The committee and coaches are developing a training programme that works and adheres to Social Distancing Regulations, so please be patient we know it’s going to be different.

Last weekend was going to be Round 4 of the Senior season and Round 1 of the Junior season so obviously the 2020 season will be shorter than usual.
At this point Hockey WA is wanting to start the season as early as possible, which will more than likely be a half season with or without finals.
Discussions are still ongoing and the final decisions will be made once a start date is confirmed. As the season will be reduced your fees will be reduced accordingly.

The Club is also looking for a Bar and Kitchen Manager for the 2020 season, so if you or someone you know wants to do this job please get in contact with me on – 0408180074

I am also interested in your ideas for anything that you would like to see or do at the club – and we would also like your help to get it off the ground.

Well I think that is enough from me,

See you on the turf

Jamie D’Souza

COVID-19 update 16 April 2020

Dear SRHC Members

As promised in our email of 17 March 2020 we provide the following update with regards the 2020 winter hockey season.

At this point in time, Hockey WA is still working towards a modified season for 2020 winter hockey with a commencement date after 31st May 2020. The timing and format of any competition structure will be dependant on many factors, including the lifting of social isolation restrictions by the Federal, State and Local Government Authorities. At this point in time the City of Gosnells has cancelled all bookings and activities at all of it’s facilities until the end of May and is reviewing these on a month by month basis. For the SRHC this includes use of the turf facility, Les Sands pavilion and the Sutherlands Reserve D grass fields.

The health and well-being of our players, their family’s and our volunteers remains our top priority and with this in mind the committee is currently working on some innovative ways for us to keep in touch with our Hawks family as well as keep fit and active at the same time. Watch this space!!

Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook at and search for our club group Hawks Hockey, which is exclusively for members only.

We would like to again thank all our members that have already made full or partial payment of their 2020 fees. Once Hockey WA is able to provide us with a firm decision to move forward with a modified 2020 season all membership fees for the season will be reviewed in full and adjustments made where necessary with members having the option to carry over any surplus payments into the 2021 season or receive a partial refund. Should the 2020 season be cancelled all together then all members who have paid their fees in advance will be given the option to carry their payment over to the 2021 season or receive a refund in full.

With the above in mind, we also appreciate that many members who had paid their 2020 fees in advance may already be suffering financial hardship due to COVID-19. If this is the case and you wish to have your 2020 fee payment refunded in the interim then please email the Treasurer at and include the amount you would like refunded as well as your bank BSB and account number where you would like the amount deposited to.

Players that have ordered and paid for uniforms and merchandise will still receive these items in due course. Some items are ready for collection from suppliers and others are currently in production. As soon as restrictions are lifted and it is safe to do so we will arrange for you to be able to collect you items from the clubroom.

In the mean-time, stay home, stay safe and if you have any queries regarding any of the above, please do not hesitate to get in contact via email at

The SRHC Committee

Dear SRHC Members,

After advice from Hockey Australia, Hockey WA has today advised clubs of the decision to postpone all hockey competitions, events, training and activities until the 31st May 2020. Please click here for the full Hockey WA statement.

In response to the above, the Southern River Hockey Club has made the difficult decision to suspend all club training and events until 21st April 2020. Unfortunately, this includes our planned Open Day this Saturday 21st March 2020. This situation will be reviewed again in the coming weeks as we receive more information from Hockey Australia and Hockey WA. Further updates will be communicated to all members as soon as practical.

The delay to the start of the 2020 season is disappointing for our all our Hawks, but the health and well-being of our players, their family’s and our volunteers is our top priority.

With regards to your membership fees for the season, we ask that all members temporarily suspend paying until we have further updates. Thank you to those players who have already paid fees in advance. Once the competition commences, any adjustments to fees due to a shortened playing season will be communicated to members.

Players that have ordered and paid for uniforms and merchandise will still receive these items in due course as it is currently being manufactured by the suppliers.

If you have any queries regarding the above, please do not hesitate to get in contact via email at
